It’s quite astounding how seriously Audi are taking their position in the market. They’re trying harder and harder to offer excellent value right from the bottom of the range, and they’re doing it very successfully.

The Audi A3 Sportback, is pretty much the same A3 Audi launched last year, except it has 4 doors (thus the Sportback moniker). And it seems that they’ve hit a home run. From the side profile it looks more like a small station wagon than a hatback. That being said, it looks really nice, the styling is first class, and from every angle it’s a neatly designed car. It’s not as outrageous as the new A-Class, but not quite as conservative as the Golf either. It strikes a fine balance of stylish and contemporary.

The drive in the 1.6TDi is quite stellar, the engine is quiet enough for a diesel, the suspension is fantastic, and the power is perfect for a car like this. The 77kW is neatly assisted by the 250Nm of torque delivered buy the diesel engine. Audi makes some terrific gearboxes, and they’ve coupled one of their excellent S-Tronic ‘boxes with the diesel in the front of the A3. A winning combination.

The 7-Speed box is silky smooth in the changes, and compliments the diesel engine very nicely, assisting it to get the fuel economy down to a staggering 4.1 L/100kms, which is our tested economy, and below the claimed 4.3 l/100kms.

The A3 Sportback’s real party piece though is the interior. This is where Audi are really handing it to the competition. A perfect balance of minimalist and luxurious, with LCD screens protruding from the dash like they do in the A7 (a car 3 times the price) and a touch sensitive control for navigation. Full bluetooth integration, SATNAV, multi-functional steering wheel and a detailed onboard computer with numerous view settings.

As a complete package the A3 sportback is really well rounded, and definitely worth considering is you’re looking to buy a new car around the R300k mark.

Audi have worked hard, and their hard work has paid off, they’ve managed to produce a fantastic car and make it available at a competitive price.

Yeah I drove the 1.8 on the launch, 132kW is nice, although I thought they coud have pulled a little more power from that engine. S3 will be around soon too.
